Julianna Margulies was born June 8, 1966 in Spring Valley, New York to Paul, an advertising copywrighter, and Francesca Margulies, a ballet dancer. After her parents divorced when Julianna was two, she (along with her older sisters Rachael and Alexandra) lived in London, Paris, and New York. When she was fourteen she was enrolled in a boarding school in New Hampshire. After school, Julianna graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in New York with a Bachelor's Degree in the Performance Arts. After that, she made a living by waitressing and knitting. Her career began when she started modeling for a hair permanent company,(even though her curls are natural, they said otherwise). Then she had several TV appearances such as "Homicide: Life on the Street" and, later, a role as a nurse who tries to commit suicide on the pilot episode of a then-unknown show called "ER". Her character was supposed to last only for the pilot episode, but the test audiences loved her so much, producers brought Carol Hathaway back from the dead. She remained a lead in "ER" (the highest-rated drama on TV)for seven years before leaving. During that time, she won an Emmy in 1994/95 for "Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series" and two Screen Actors Guild Award for "Outstanding Ensemble Performance in a Drama Series" (1995/96) that were shared with the entire cast. During those seven years, however, Julianna took a part in many movies, such as "Traveller" with Bill Paxton, and "Paradise Road" with Glenn Glose, and Cate Blanchett.
